I have no qualms about admitting that I've been misleading you all along. I've urged you to pursue little p purpose as a pathway to health, longevity, and ultimately happiness. Yet, in the same breath, I've pointed out how The Harvard Adult Development Study shows that neither purpose, wealth, nor achievements truly guarantee happiness.
The real secret ingredient, it turns out, is interpersonal connections. While this may seem contradictory, I believe it isn’t. As we've discussed, little p purpose serves as a powerful conduit for building communities and connections. When we engage in activities that ignite our passions, we naturally attract curious people—like moths to a flame.
A vivid example from my own life is my annual attendance at the FinCon conference (which I will be en route to as you read this), which helps personal finance content creators go pro and scale. I first traveled to Washington, D.C., in 2018 for this massive gathering. There, I met countless fellow creators and formed lasting collaborations and friendships. Over the years, this network has continued to expand.
Attending FinCon reflects my little p purpose around writing, podcasting, and public speaking. It’s a space where I connect with others who share my interests and aspirations, forming a vital part of my community. Without this incredible opportunity, I wouldn’t have a podcast, an agent, or even a book to discuss.
It’s not just FinCon; it's all the other conferences, meetups, and gatherings that link me to like-minded individuals. These interactions have transformed my life, providing me with a network of friends and associates stronger and more cohesive than I’ve ever had before.
And this brings me joy!

I believe we overcomplicate the concept of happiness. It might be as simple as choosing something you enjoy and surrounding yourself with others who feel the same.

I didn't like FinCon when I went in 2022 - it actually put me off blogging. Not my tribe, I guess. That was my first ever in-person event, but I didn't give up. I've been to EconoMe (better) and 3 CampFI weekends (best!). In fact, it was my first CampFI where I made the same realization about community and connection that you mention above.
