Imagine reaching the absolute pinnacle of your profession. You are named International Sports Photographer of the Year. You have done everything right. Then, your boss calls you in and hands you a 3 percent raise on your $32,000 salary.
That was the reality for my guest this week on Earn & Invest, Vincent Pugliese. He realized in that moment that what we call job security is actually a massive vulnerability. When you have a traditional job, one person controls 100 percent of your income. When you run a business with dozens of clients, you distribute that risk and create genuine security.
Vincent and his wife Elizabeth walked away from their newspaper jobs in March 2008 to shoot private events. He realized a wedding photographer could earn in a single day what he made in a month at the paper. But the goal was never just to accumulate a massive net worth. It was to buy back his family’s time.
During our conversation, Vincent shared a definition of true freedom that resonated deeply with my own decision to step down from full-time medicine to practice 15 hours a week in hospice. True freedom is not a specific number in an investment account. It is taking your young kids to the park on a Thursday morning without even knowing what day of the week it is. It is waking up with total control over how you fill your hours.
Once you achieve that freedom, you have to figure out how to fill your time. Just as importantly, you have to know when a specific chapter is over.
We discuss a reliable metric for knowing when you are done with a project: when dread consistently outweighs excitement, it is time to pivot. Vincent shared an honest memory of feeling secretly relieved whenever a wedding was canceled because it meant a day off. That was his signal to move on, evolving his career into coaching freelancers, launching the Total Life Freedom community, and eventually returning to his roots in sports storytelling.
Today, Vincent spends his time on a pure passion project called The Ultimate Press Pass. He travels to historic sports sites to uncover obscure, untold stories for his YouTube channel. It is expensive and currently lacks a clear monetization model. Because he is financially free, he can pursue it purely for creative flow.
We often dismiss sports as just a game, but Vincent reminds us that it serves as a powerful allegory for human triumph and connection. He shares a touching story about attending a Mets game with his late brother shortly before his sudden passing, reinforcing that shared experiences are the true dividends of a life well-lived.
P.S. If you stick around for the after-show, Vincent and I take a deep dive into 1980s baseball nostalgia. We swap stories about Dwight Gooden, Daryl Strawberry, and our shared childhood memories of the This Week in Baseball theme song.
The Happiness Code Pre-Sale My next book, The Happiness Code, officially drops on March 9, 2027.
