I still remember how isolating it felt when I first discovered financial independence.
I was burning out in my medical career, quietly devouring blogs and podcasts, running the numbers in my head on a loop. But I had a massive problem: I didn’t have a single person in my real life I could actually talk to about it. If you tell your friends or colleagues that you are planning to walk away from a high-paying, prestigious career in your forties to do nothing, they look at you like you have two heads.
That all changed for me in 2018. I finally took a leap of faith and attended an in-person financial community event.
Being in a room with people who just understood changed everything. It gave me the mental fortitude and the courage I desperately needed to finally let go of my identity as a traditional doctor. Blogs and podcasts are incredible for sharing information. But in-person events? They change what you believe is possible.
For our Earn & Invest rewind this week, we are opening the vault to revisit a classic 2022 conversation about a legendary event that embodied this magic better than almost any other: Chautauqua.
While Chautauqua has since closed its doors and no longer holds retreats, its impact on the Financial Independence (FI) movement is permanent. The surprising truth? We spent very little time actually talking about money.
As Bryce points out in the episode, achieving FI is just a math problem. The math is the easy part. But figuring out how to live a happy, fulfilling life after leaving the rat race? Dealing with the terrifying transition of “day plus one” of retirement? That is much, much harder.

The line that stays with me: the math is the easy part.
I watch the same truth play out one level up — in families. Transferring assets is a math problem; documents solve it on schedule. But "day plus one" comes for families too: the first decision after a founder is gone, when everyone discovers the money transferred and the identity, judgment, and ways of deciding didn't. And your point about micro-communities lands hardest of all — a room of 30 strangers reached honesty about money by Tuesday. Most actual families never get there in thirty years. That's the room I try to help them build.
