I’m on solid ground on the financial front, but just ending (I hope) a two-year stretch of over-optimizing on my health. But that attempt to optimize taught me a lot and I’m not sure I’d have wanted to do without it. There’s something to be said for exploring the contours of optimization in order to rest more securely in the basics, don’t you think?
I've always found that somewhere between 50 and 70% effort gets you 80-95% of desired goal. This seemed to be true in business, military, school, fitness. Once achieved that last 20-5% not only takes 4 and 5 times the effort for each incremental gain, the last few increments are impossible. So I agree, achieve 80% financial goals, move on to 80% fitness then 80% relationships, 80% ..... Laziness does have some virtue, it's called efficiency.

That insight was more useful and thought provoking than you know.
You almost need to go overboard to realize what is overboard.
This is especially true early on when time is limited and more valuably spent on increasing your career trajectory or investing in relationships.
Spot on there, on both counts. Certainly agrees with my views and my financial ethos.

Nice perspective and reminder to stop fiddling with my portfolio, which I just tweaked this morning
It's so helpful to keep putting these reminders out there. The basics are so important yet get overlooked for that last 20% far too often!
