For decades, you train your brain to do one thing: save. You optimize your taxes, you invest in index funds, and you build your nest egg. Then you reach financial independence, and suddenly you are expected to flip a switch and comfortably spend. It is no wonder so many retirees feel completely paralyzed by the transition.
Rather than forcing yourself to spend for short-term joy or stressing over the mathematical perfection of dying with zero, the actual secret to a successful decumulation phase is eliminating decision fatigue. In this week’s episode of Earn & Invest, I explore ten highly practical strategies to spend your money with zero anxiety.
Here are a few of the core rules we discuss in the episode:
Gift money while your children actually need it. Rather than hoarding a massive inheritance for when your kids are in their sixties and already established, incorporate regular quarterly gifting into your retirement budget right now while they are building their lives.
Stop micro-tracking your budget. Delete the granular budgeting apps and stop analyzing individual grocery receipts. Shifting to macro-level quarterly reviews relieves everyday money stress while keeping you on track.
Eliminate charitable decision fatigue. Use a Donor-Advised Fund. You can transfer appreciated stock in large, infrequent moves. Once the money is secured in the fund, granting donations becomes an easy, joyful process rather than a stressful tax calculation.
Stop asking your spouse for permission. Once both partners share a solid understanding of family finances and overall spending limits, you can eliminate the constant check-ins and stressful monthly money meetings.
Maintain a small stream of active income. Earning even a modest amount through passion work or side gigs to cover twenty to twenty-five percent of your annual spending acts as a powerful buffer against sequence of returns risk. It makes spending on luxuries feel completely safe.
Define your long-term care plan. Whether you use a single-premium policy, home equity, or a dedicated investment reserve, having a defined strategy removes the underlying fear of a destitute old age. It frees you to spend comfortably today.
Embrace “little P” purpose. Daily fulfillment costs very little. If you ground your days in process-oriented activities like writing, walking, or reading, an occasional big expenditure will never derail your peace of mind.
You will have to tune in to hear the rest, including my specific system for liquidating equities on a set schedule and why you should only check your portfolio on market-up days.
