We live in a time when many people, especially young folks, are feeling more disconnected than ever before. There's this underlying sense that we are powerless in a world that’s spinning out of control, and it's easy to see why. With so many crises in play—politically, economically, and environmentally—it can feel like we’re caught in a whirlwind with no clear direction or way out. But amidst this chaos, there are ways we can regain some sense of agency. Let’s break down the root causes of this disconnection and how we can start rebuilding our sense of purpose in this turbulent world.

1. Politically, We’re Lost

The political landscape in the U.S. has become a battleground of division. Parties are fighting tooth and nail, leaving voters on either side feeling unheard and disillusioned. In any given election, it’s almost a guarantee that half of the population is upset by the outcome, and the other half is just trying to hold on to some semblance of stability. As we watch the fabric of democracy slowly unravel, it’s hard not to feel like we have no control. If we’re being honest, many of us can’t even agree on what is “truth” anymore.

This polarization isn’t just frustrating—it’s soul-crushing. It's not just about political opinions; it's about feeling like we have no say in the systems that govern our lives. It’s like trying to navigate a labyrinth with no map. And that lack of agency is a huge source of disconnection for many, especially young people who might feel like the political system doesn't reflect their needs or values.

2. Economically, We’re Struggling

Let’s talk money—or rather, the lack of it. Inflation has been a constant rollercoaster. We thought it was under control, but then the price of basic items like eggs skyrockets again. The media may tout economic recovery, but on the ground, people are still struggling to make ends meet. It’s no longer just about whether you can afford a night out or a vacation—it’s about whether you can pay rent, feed your family, or fill up your gas tank.

This sense of financial instability creates a deep feeling of disconnection. When you’re struggling to make enough money to cover the basics, it feels impossible to look ahead with any optimism. For many, the future seems increasingly uncertain. The belief that we could build a better future has been replaced with a fear that we’ll never be able to keep up. And this economic disconnect is a real source of anxiety, particularly for younger generations who are just trying to break into a system that feels rigged against them.

3. Environmental Stress: The Climate Crisis Looms Large

Now, let’s add the weight of climate change to the mix. For years, scientists have been warning us that our actions are accelerating the destruction of the planet, and it’s becoming harder to ignore. Wildfires, hurricanes, floods, and other extreme weather events are happening with alarming frequency. As much as we try to look the other way, there’s no escaping the fact that we’re heading toward an unsustainable future.

Young people, in particular, are feeling the pressure. They’re being told that the world they inherit will be marked by environmental disaster, and they’re left wondering: What can we even do about it? Many feel like there’s no way to stop the inevitable, and that feeling of helplessness contributes to the overall sense of disconnection. How can we care about the future when the future seems so uncertain?

A Loss of Agency: What It All Adds Up To

So, when you combine these political, economic, and environmental stressors, what do you get? A profound sense of disconnection and a loss of agency. We look at the world around us, see all the things we can’t control, and feel overwhelmed. It’s like watching a series of unfortunate events unfold in real-time, knowing full well that there’s nothing we can do to stop them.

But here’s the thing: There is something we can do.

We might not be able to fix the political system, stabilize the economy, or reverse the damage done to the environment on our own. But we do have the power to create purpose in our daily lives, and that purpose can help us regain a sense of agency—even when the world feels like it’s spiraling out of control.

Little-P Purpose: Taking Control of What You Can

I’m not talking about big-P Purpose—the kind that involves changing the world with a single grand act or achieving a massive goal. No, I’m talking about little-p purpose: those small, process-oriented actions that give us meaning and help us regain a sense of agency in our own lives.

Little-p purpose is about doing the things that light you up. It’s about getting involved in activities and communities that align with your passions, the things that make you feel alive, and engaging in processes where you have control. For instance, maybe it’s a small part of your job that you actually love or a childhood hobby that still brings you joy. Even in a world full of chaos, these little sparks of purpose can serve as anchors to help you stay grounded.

How to Reclaim Your Sense of Agency

If you’re feeling lost or disconnected, here are three steps you can take to find your purpose and start feeling more in control of your life:

Identify Your Purpose Anchors
Start by reflecting on what lights you up. What activities make you feel energized and fulfilled? It could be something as simple as a creative project, a community cause you care about, or even a type of work that excites you. What would you regret not doing if you knew you had limited time? These are your purpose anchors—your entry points to meaningful action.
Join Communities That Share Your Values
Once you’ve identified what matters to you, find others who share those interests. Seek out communities—whether online or in-person—that revolve around these purpose anchors. Being surrounded by people who are passionate about the same things will deepen your sense of connection and purpose.
Collaborate and Build Together
Finally, allow these communities to help you connect with others. Learn from people who have something to teach you, and share your knowledge with those who need it. Work together to create something meaningful, whether it’s a project, a piece of art, or simply a supportive environment. By collaborating, you’ll start to feel like you’re making a difference in the world—no matter how small.

The Power of Collaboration: Finding Common Ground

Ultimately, the political, economic, and environmental issues that seem so insurmountable can feel less overwhelming when we start to focus on what we can control. Little-p purpose is a powerful antidote to despair, and it’s also the key to rebuilding trust and cooperation in our fractured world.

When we engage in purpose-driven communities, we’re more likely to have meaningful conversations, listen to different perspectives, and find middle ground. And let’s face it: in today’s world, we need more collaboration and communication—not less.

In Conclusion: Focus on What You Can Control

The world is full of things beyond our control, from the state of politics to the fluctuations of the economy to the looming environmental crisis. But that doesn’t mean we should give in to despair. Instead, focus on what you can control: your purpose, your actions, and your connections. By nurturing small, purposeful actions, you’ll start to regain a sense of agency—and, in doing so, change the world in your own way.
